Mutolo Hill and the Dolomits of the South

Monte Mutolo e le dolomiti del sud

A looped-trail excursion to the top of Mount Mutolo, also known as the Southern Dolomites, due to the particular morphology and composition of the rocks.

This small portion of the Aspromonte area is considered a “tectonic window” as geologically it is a small limestone-dolomitic block compared to the granite-crystalline block of which the Aspromonte is composed.

The excursion will take place in the area of Canolo and the Apromonte National Park.

Path that winds through a track until you reach a disused quarry, a rock used for construction, from here begins a path that is not very beaten among the limestone rocks that will take us to the top of the mountain. We will enjoy the view towards Aspromonte, towards Canolo which is located at the foot of Monte Mutolo, located in the middle of two canyons carved into the rock by the Novito and Pachina rivers.

Subsequently, continuing along the ridge, our gaze will move first to Agnana, and then to the coast of Gelsomini. Given the elevated position, we will enjoy an excellent view of the Novito river and the entire coast.

Finally, the gaze will turn towards Gerace, which stands out on its fortress, as well as the Tre Pizzi and much of the Aspromonte.

On our way we will meet the limestone rocks, of particular interest, some terraces, testimony of distant times, as well as some species of wild orchids.
